Dear Jeffrey,

Spring is Here! - Show season has started!

My first show was a wonderful WFDA show in Darien, Ct. The largest class was the FEI test of choice and the top two, with almost the same score, were two who have competed successfully in the Youth Festival.

Mica Mabragana from Argentina who first competed with the Argentine team at age 12 and was last year's FEI YR winner won the class with a 68.XX. And close behind with a 68. was Ashley Peterson who won several divisions starting at training level at age 11. Congrats.

Another many time competitor, Megan Davis has been consistently winning her FEI Junior classes. Megan and Ashley's parents have been great volunteers from our earliest years.

We love to hear about the success of our D4K riders . Why don't you post your show results on the Message Board under General Discussions?  I also love seeing our D4K saddle pads, skirts, and polos as I travel around.

stubs mare  Last week 38 of our adult volunteers and sponsors had a great "Day in the City". We went to see the lovely paintings of George Stubbs at the Frick Gallery in New York City and then had an amazing lunch at the marvelous new Hearst Corporation Tower. We brought in about $525 from this excursion and have decided to use this money to help two riders come to the Youth Dressage Festival who would not be able to come otherwise.

Any competitor who would like to participate but cannot afford it, should contact me at graydressage@optonline.net for more information. We want to help some riders who truly cannot come otherwise.

Rich Malloch, who so generously hosted the luncheon, has challenged us to raise $5000 for this fund which Hearst will match. Imagine $10,000 to have a fund to help riders come to compete who could not come otherwise.

Any checks made out to dressage4kids, Inc should be sent to 25 Lake Avenue, Bedford, NY 10506.

Speaking of the Youth Dressage Festival, we have some additions to the Prizelist.

A reminder:   the dates for the Youth Dressage Festival are Monday to Wednesday, August 20-22, again in Saugerties, NY.

The prize list is posted at

Dressage4Kids.com . The Festival runs immediately after the Centerline Dressage Show and CDI. The East Coast Pony Cup will also be held at the Centerline Show - pony divisions at all levels for adults and youth!   (Info on Centerline show will be posted at:  Centerline Show)

New for 2007:  Activities for Younger Children at the Youth Dressage Festival

This year there will be two hours of organized activities for leadline participants and other children ages 4 to 10 who will be at the Youth Dressage Festival.  These activities will be help in the VIP Pavilion and in the sand ring behind it.  The purpose of these activities is to motivate younger children to participate in Lendon's Youth Dressage Festival in the future.

Activities will be held from 2pm - 4pm on Monday and Tuesday, and from 9am-11am on Wednesday (so that children can be ready for leadline at 12 noon).

Parents will be asked to pay a fee of $20 (a one time fee for any one or all three days) for their child to participate in the children's activities.  Each child will receive a Melissa and Doug "Gallop and Go Stick Pony" (go to gummylump@aol.com to view).  The children will learn gaits, movements, and dressage tests on their stick ponies, and will take their ponies home with them at the end of the show.  There will be pony arts and crafts, and games with prizes each day.

Please contact Susan Sieber for additional information and to register your child for these activities: 203-223-4261, ssieber@interstatelumber.com .

The Ninth Annual Youth Dressage Festival

Has Been Named a Host Event for a Riding for Reading Class

R4R image    Riding for Reading is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting reading, literacy and education through equestrian sports and activities. Partnering with selected horse shows for fundraising, Riding for Reading awards monetary grants to school libraries and distributes books collected in book drives to school systems and youth organizations.

Ours is the first dressage show to hold a Riding for Reading class.  I felt it was a perfect match for the Youth Dressage Festival because of its emphasis on education and community service - both essential components of the Festival.

Money donated by Festival sponsors will be matched by the Riding for Reading organization and combined with entry fees to fund the library grant.  Instead of riding just for themselves, competitors in the Riding for Reading class will represent their schools.

We are asking competitors to donate gently used books which we will distribute to a high-need school in the Saugerties area.  We will continue to donate a portion of the books to the Family of Woodstock for distribution to their social service agencies.

All riders, no matter where they place in their class, will earn a grant for their schools' libraries, plus prizes for themselves. In addition, riders can choose to direct their library grant to the high-need school instead of their own school.  Riders will also receive a certificate attesting to their participation in this community service effort.

The Riding for Reading class will be run as a group dressage pleasure class, subdivided by age and skill level.  This will allow the youngest riders to compete on an equal basis with the most advanced older junior riders.  There are no qualifying requirements for this class.

The riders will be asked to show at the walk, trot and canter.  Horses may be asked to halt from the trot and remain standing quietly.  Horses may be asked to rein back. Horses should be a pleasure to ride, with steady, balanced, regular gaits accepting a light contact with the mouth.  Transitions between gaits should be smooth. The head should be carried in a relaxed manner, while the horse remains obedient and alert.  Misconduct or resistance will be penalized.

The Riding for Reading class will be held on Monday in the afternoon.  I expect riders would welcome the opportunity for an additional group riding experience before their division championship's equitation class.  Entry fees for this class are $25.

I love the idea that our riders would have another opportunity to be successful with ponies and horses that might not yet be stars in the Dressage arena.  I want our riders to be able to enjoy their horses in as many different ways as possible.  I hope there will be many entries! And thank you to Theresa Davidson for your work in organizing this.

Miscelaneous items:

Please help us find volunteers for the day of the show. Since it is during the week, some of our wonderful regular helpers will not not able to come.

Entry forms will be posted by the end of May. Get your entries in early! Last year we had to turn away some competitors who missed the closing date for entries.!

We are looking for the names of any riders or horses who will be competing this year who have competed in every one of our shows since 1999.

I hope that you have noticed that you can earn your stabling fees by getting ads for the program. Check under Stabling in the prizelist.

Please note in the prize list that we are not providing shavings in the stalls. Unfortunately we have had a problem with people taking shavings that were not theirs. Very sad.

One clarification on the reading list: riders in the Introductory Division and riders 9 and under are required to the read the Prize List and the Usborne Book of Horse Care only. Everyone else has two books to read. I hope that this year will be the first year that everyone pays attention the age ruling. PLEASE make sure you read this very carefully in the prize list.

Every year someone reads the wrong book for their age group.
