Reminders about the Festival:
-
Laura Akin and Kim Best are still looking for some key volunteers. Contact them at bestkim2003@snet.net.
-
Start packing up articles, clothing, and tack for the Tack Sale.
-
Put aside some books for the Book Drive.
-
We will have the Turnout Competition on Tuesday for those who wish to participate. Plan on time for the inspection before you warm up.
-
There is a new Hampton Inn in Kingston if you are having trouble getting a room.
-
If you will also be at the Centerline Show on the weekend immediately before the Festival, make sure you let Centerline Events know and you will be stabled so that you do not have to move for the Festival. We also have an agreement with Centerline for anyone that needs to bring a non competing horse to stable during their show that will give them volunteer time will receive a very reduced rate for their stall. Contact Debra Reinhardt. Any volunteer that stays over with a horse for our Festival will also have a reduced stall rate. If trainer/parent is showing at the Centerline Show and wants to keep their horses on the grounds during the Festival, we will give a discount on the stalls. But in all cases you must let both shows know that you will have stabling at both shows - now! Do NOT ask during either show for stall adjustments. This is going to be very complicated and will take a good deal of planning ahead - thank goodness we have Bill Davis to organize our stabling.
-
Remember that for the schooling show you will have to score your own tests.

We have an amazing group of judges: Robert Dover, Margaret Freeman, Scott Hassler, and Dolly Hannon will be judging Dressage. Pam Goodrich, Suzanne Hassler, and Courtney King will be judging Equitation. Karen Offield will be our roving trainer and Tack Room competition judge. Spectators may sit with Margaret Freeman during one test and she will explain how the classes are judged. If you have never sat with Margaret, I can tell you that you really must try to do so at the Festival. Once the classes are scheduled the time will be decided. She will do this once on Tuesday and possibly during the freestyles on Wednesday. Sybille Crafts and Lou Denizard (currently competing in the Pan Am Games) are judging the schooling show.
Robin Levine has offered to do a talk for parents on nutrition and eating disorders as related to the young equestrian. This will be held in the later afternoon on Tuesday.
Our Roving Trainers are all former Youth Festival Champions and now successful professionals: Alison End, and Liz Austin. If you didn't ask for a Roving Trainer on your Entry Form you may sign up for one at the show. Everyone who wants a roving trainer must check the schedule at the show.

I want to make sure that everyone knows the new evening plans for the Youth Dressage Festival. They are different than before.
On Monday everyone will collect at the VIP Pavilion for opening remarks. While the riders do their written test there will be a small reception for all adults in the Food Booth area.
On Tuesday evening all youth are invited to a pizza party (no pizza for adults) in the food booth area while the parents/trainers may buy tickets for the dinner in the VIP Pavilion.

As a rider, as a coach, and as a show organizer I have three major pet peeves that I know others share with me.
1. Drivers who do not follow parking rules. We have many wonderful volunteers, but we have to pay people to oversee the parking - it is such a waste of money just to make people follow the rules. Although the HITS facility is huge there is not a lot of parking space so we have to be considerate. Please?
2. Riders in the warmup areas who do not look up and therefore expect everyone to get out of their way. Also riders who stand their horses in the warm up area to chat, or take off boots, etc. If you need to stand still for any reason, go outside the arena for those moments.
3. Riders warming up who do not know what time they go, what arena they are in, whom they go after. Before you get on your horse take a little piece of paper and write on it your ride time, your arena, and the numbers of the three riders ahead of you. When you get to the arena find those three riders so you know when they leave to go for your test. That way you will know if the rings are running early or late. This can be a good job for moms or dads too. Our ring stewards are there to help make sure the warm up area is safe and to tell you if the ring is running early or late. They are not there to answer questions that you should have the answer to.

Thanks to the generosity of the group who participated in the Day in the City to view the Stubbs exhibit at the Frick Gallery and a wonderful lunch at the Hearst Tower, we are able to offer competition scholarships for two riders who would not be able to come to the Youth Dressage Festival without financial help. Each scholarship will try to cover entries, overnight accommodations and transportation.
Applicants must be in a situation where they would not be able to come without financial help from D4K. Many riders receive help from others and/or help themselves through various fundraising efforts. This is meant for riders who cannot find any other way to make this show possible for them. Contact Lendon at graydressage@optonline.net if you in need of this scholarship. If the applicant is not chosen for this scholarship, he/she will not be allowed to compete.
Of those who receive a scholarship to compete, Laura Akin of All Star Profiles has donated a free two page profile to the rider with the highest overall score. She hopes that this will help the rider raise money for herself next year. Laura has been very successful developing profiles that have assisted riders to get sponsorship for themselves.
Thank you Laura and All Star Profiles

Is there anyone coming to the Centerline Events show on the weekend just before the festival who has a horse/pony that they could loan for the Dressage Seat Medal Finals. This is the national Junior equitation championships and qualified riders are coming from all over the country. The horse/pony needs to be able to perform first level movements and be mannerly working in a group. The class is on Saturday.
