Spooky Times for your Worm Bin
The leaves are falling, the wind howls day and night through the soon-to-be bare trees and your worm bin is taking the brunt of the change in humidity levels and temperature. Excessive humidity and cold can have a drastic effect on your worm composter, and so can excessive debris like twigs and wet leaves. Here are a few tips to be sure that your worm bin survives the scary Halloween season:
  • Keep it Clean: As the leaves, twigs and stick s blow off the trees in and around you yard, keep your worm compost bin cleaned out until the last of the bits of Fall falls down. The twigs can seriously hinder the ability for your worms to move around and do their work as they need to, so this is vital to the viability of your bin.
  • Keep it Warm: Increase the amounts of brown compost materials that you put into your bin this time of year to maintain a steady temperature for optimal composting. Paper and leaves are great additions to keep your bin warm no matter the wind chill outside..
  • Keep it Dry: Not totally dry, mind you, but the increase in humidity in some regions this time of year can make for a soupy environment for your worms, so cover your bin a little more carefully to keep out excess rain and water.
1. Keep it clean.
2. Keep ir warm.
3. Keep it dry.

Yard and Garden Clean Up Tips

The fall is an optimal time to get your yard ready for spring. Yes, I said spring. Taking a little extra care with your garden and yard will ensure that your flowers, trees, shrubs and grass are vibrant and full come the warm seasons.

Fresh Air and Food
While there should be no shortening of fresh air outside, your garden and lawn need a little extra shot before they bed down for the winter. Aerating your yard and garden can infuse the ground with an added boost of oxygen in the ground. A thatcher will provide the equipment you need to aerate your yard and garden.

Once you aerate, use lawn and garden food to give your yard a little bit of sustenance as the cold months come in.

Weed and Seed
Remove all the dead leaves from your plants and pull the weeds from in between your shrubs and trees so they have less chance or returning next year.  Then, seed your recently aerated lawn to ensure new growth.

Shave and a Hair Cut
The last step for prepping your yard for the fall is trimming back your shrubs and trees. Removing any dead or damaged branches and removing the overgrown stems will help your trees and shrubs better handle being weighed down with snow or ice.
